You called three providers about local SEO. One quoted $500 a month. One quoted $1,800. One came back at $4,000. None of them explained why the numbers were so far apart.
The gap is not greed on one end and generosity on the other. Those three quotes describe two different kinds of work, and the industry is bad at telling you which one is sitting in front of you.
Michigan local SEO does run from roughly $500 to $5,000 a month. That range is accurate, and it will not help you build a budget. What follows narrows it: what each level of spending buys, what pushes a Michigan business toward one end or the other, and how to work out which product you are shopping for in the first place.
Key Takeaways
- Michigan providers commonly quote between $500 and $5,000 a month for local SEO.
- The national average for local SEO sits around $1,557 a month, which puts a $500 quote well below market rather than a leaner version of the same thing.
- Anything under roughly $900 a month is usually maintaining your listings, not competing for customers.
- Your industry’s competitiveness, the number of areas you target, and the current condition of your website are what move the price.
- Traction typically appears between months three and six, so read any monthly figure as a twelve month commitment.
Two Different Products, One Confusing Price Range
Most pricing guides treat local SEO as a single service sold at different quality levels, as though $500 buys a thin version of what $3,000 buys. That framing is why the numbers look irrational.
There are two products here.
The first is listing maintenance. Someone keeps your Google Business Profile filled out and accurate, makes sure your name, address, and phone number match across the directories that carry them, and sends you a report. This is useful work. A business with a wrong phone number on Apple Maps is losing calls it will never hear about. But the goal is accuracy, not customers. It is not built to move you past a competitor.
The second is competing for search demand. Content built around what your customers search, technical work so your site can be crawled and ranked, links earned from places that carry weight in your market, and tracking that follows a search through to a phone call. The goal is to take business from companies that want the same business you do.
A $500 quote and a $3,000 quote are usually not the same service at different grades. They are aimed at different outcomes. Comparing them on price alone is like comparing an oil change to a rebuilt transmission and deciding one shop is overcharging.
So the first question is not what local SEO costs. It is this: do you need to be findable, or do you need to be chosen?
The Numbers, and Where They Come From
Michigan providers quote across the full national spread. You will find local SEO offered here from about $500 a month at the entry point, with competitive multi city work running past $5,000.
Set against national benchmarks, that spread looks less strange. Survey data from Ahrefs puts the average local SEO engagement at roughly $1,557 a month. Broader SEO work averages closer to $2,917. Industry pricing research puts typical small business spend on comprehensive search work between $2,500 and $5,000 a month.
Read those figures next to a $500 quote and the picture shifts. Five hundred dollars is not the market rate with the waste trimmed out. It is roughly a third of what this work costs on average nationally, and the difference is explained by scope rather than efficiency.
For calibration, here is where we sit. Our programs start at $1,500 a month, and most of our clients pay between $2,500 and $3,500. Our floor is below the national average for local SEO, and our typical engagement lands near the middle of what small businesses spend on search. We are putting that here rather than at the bottom of the page, because a pricing article that hides its own pricing until the last screen is not much of a pricing article.
What Michigan Changes About the Price
Metro Detroit Is a Different Market Than the Rest of the State
Southeast Michigan is contested in exactly the categories where local search matters most. Personal injury law, home services, dental and medical practices, and roofing across the Detroit metro face the same intensity you would find in any large American market. Firms there have been investing in search for years, and passing them means outworking a real head start.
A business in Traverse City, Alpena, or Marquette is competing against a handful of others for the same terms. The work is the same in kind and much smaller in volume.
Same state, different math. Any statewide average buries this completely, which is why “SEO in Michigan costs X” is close to meaningless as a planning number.
Your Industry Matters More Than Your City
Two businesses on the same street in Royal Oak can face completely different costs. A personal injury firm and a landscaping company are both local businesses competing locally, but one client is worth a few hundred dollars to one of them and potentially six figures to the other.
Where a customer is worth more, more competitors show up, and they spend more to get there. The price of competing rises with them. A landscaper in a Detroit suburb may compete effectively at a level that would not get an injury firm out of the parking lot.
How Many Places You Want to Show Up
One city costs less than a county. A county costs less than the whole southeast side of the state. Each area you want to rank in needs its own page, its own local signals, and its own attention, so cost scales close to linearly with reach.
Service area businesses without a storefront have a harder version of this problem. Google leans heavily on physical location for local rankings, and a company covering fifteen municipalities out of one garage has to earn visibility in fourteen places where it has no address. That work is real, and cheap proposals tend to underprice it because the difficulty is invisible until it fails.
Three Things That Move Your Price
1
Competition in Your Market and Vertical
The more businesses fighting over a term, the more content, links, and months it takes to move. This is the largest single factor in most quotes, and no provider can shortcut it. A quote that arrived without any look at your competitive landscape was not built for your business.
2
How Much Ground You Are Covering
Cities, counties, and service areas each carry their own work. Expanding from one location to five is closer to five projects than to one project with extra pins on a map.
3
The Condition of Your Website Today
This is the one that catches owners off guard. If your site is slow, thin on content, or built in a way search engines struggle with, the first months of budget go to repairs before anything can rank. A site in decent shape reaches results faster and cheaper. A site that needs rebuilding can add more to your first year than the retainer does.
What Each Price Tier Buys
$500 to $900 a Month
Profile upkeep, citation consistency, and a monthly report. Most of it runs on software with light human oversight.
If you run one location in a market where two or three competitors show up in the map results, and what you need is for Google to have your hours right and your listings consistent, this tier does that job. We would tell you so on a call. Not every business needs more.
What it does not include: content built around what your customers search, meaningful link work, technical repair, or a strategy that adapts when your competitors move. If a competitor at this tier decides to invest, you will watch them pass you and there will be nothing in your plan to answer with.
The trouble is that most businesses buying at this tier are hoping for the second product and paying for the first.
$1,500 to $2,500 a Month
The realistic floor for work aimed at leads rather than accuracy. On page optimization across your service and location pages, content published on a schedule, Google Business Profile management that includes posts and photos rather than just data entry, and reporting that counts calls and form fills instead of ranking positions alone.
This is where most single location Michigan service businesses in moderately competitive markets belong. It sits at or just above the national average, which is worth stating plainly: this is the baseline, not the premium option.
$2,500 to $5,000 and Above
Contested industries, multiple locations, or a service area spanning many municipalities. Active content production, link earning that takes real outreach, conversion tracking wired through to your CRM, and enough hours in the month to respond when the market shifts.
Metro Detroit legal, medical, and home services realistically start here. Most of our own clients land in the lower half of this band.
Before You Accept a Quote Well Under Market
A low quote is not automatically a bad deal, but it needs three specific questions before you sign. Ask which parts of the work are automated and which parts a person performs. Ask what happens in month six rather than month one, because thin plans front load the setup and then coast. Ask what the provider will do if a competitor starts outspending you. Clear answers mean the price reflects a narrower scope you understand and accept. Vague answers mean the scope was never defined, and undefined scope is where budgets quietly disappear.

Book a Free ConsultationThe Costs That Do Not Appear on the Quote
The retainer is not the whole bill. Ask about each of these before you sign, because they surface later otherwise.
Content production is sometimes inside the monthly fee and sometimes billed on top. Two proposals at the same headline price can differ by thousands a year on this line alone.
Tools and rank tracking are usually absorbed by the provider, though some pass them through to you.
Website work is the big one. If your site cannot support the campaign, something has to pay for fixing it. On a twelve month marketing program with us the build is waived, but that is not standard across the industry, so ask before you assume.
Photography and profile assets matter more than most owners expect. Google Business Profiles with real, current photos perform better than profiles without them, and someone has to go take them.
Your own time is a real cost. Approvals, account access, review requests to customers, and answering the questions about your business that nobody outside it can answer. Budget a couple of hours a month and you will get considerably more out of the engagement.
A deeper look at how we scope this work sits on our organic search services.
Time Is Part of the Price
Months one through three are mostly foundation. Technical fixes, page structure, profile work, and content that has not had time to gather authority yet. You are paying and not yet seeing leads, and that is the plan working rather than failing.
Traction usually appears somewhere between months three and six. Results compound through month twelve and past it, because the content and links you paid for in month two are still earning in month twenty.
Which makes the monthly figure the wrong unit. At $1,500 a month you are making an $18,000 decision. At $2,500 you are making a $30,000 one. That is an uncomfortable sentence to put in writing and it is the most useful one on this page. An owner who cannot commit at that level should find out here rather than in month four.
It is also why our standard term is twelve months. We will scope shorter in the right situation, and rarely go under nine, because front loading the foundational work and then stopping before it compounds wastes your money and produces nothing either of us would want to show anyone.
Anyone promising you rankings in thirty days is describing something search engines do not do.
Why This Costs More Than It Did Two Years Ago
Prices moved across the whole industry. A February 2026 survey of more than 170 agencies by SE Ranking found around 70 percent had raised prices or planned to, with AI related work the leading reason.
The work in question is generative search, which means showing up inside the answers AI tools produce. When someone asks ChatGPT or Google’s AI results for a plumber in Ferndale, something decides which businesses get named. Influencing that is a separate body of work from ranking in the traditional blue links, and it now sits inside most serious local search programs.
Pushing the other direction, AI tooling has cut the labor on routine tasks. Audits, keyword research, and reporting that used to eat fifteen or twenty hours a month can be done in a fraction of that, and some of the saving reaches clients.
Net, prices are up. Which also means a $500 offer in 2026 sits further below market than the same offer did in 2024.

Questions to Ask Before You Sign
1
Is This Making Me Findable, or Making Me Chosen?
The answer should be immediate and specific. A provider who cannot tell you which one they sell has not decided.
2
What Happens in Month Six?
Thin plans do the setup in month one and coast afterward. A good answer describes ongoing production, not maintenance of past work.
3
Is Content Included or Billed Separately?
Get it in writing. This is the most common gap between a quoted price and a real one.
4
What Are You Measuring?
Rankings alone are a weak answer. Calls, form fills, and booked jobs are the reason you are spending the money.
5
Who Owns What If We Part Ways?
Your website, your content, your Google Business Profile, and your analytics history should all remain yours.
6
What Is the Term, and How Do I Exit?
A twelve month term is reasonable given how the work compounds. A twelve month term with no exit clause is not.
7
What If My Site Needs Rebuilding First?
Find out before you start whether that cost sits inside the engagement or arrives later as a surprise.
Ask us the same seven. If our answers do not hold up, that tells you something worth knowing before you sign anything.
What We Charge, and Why
We start at $2,500 a month. Most of our clients pay between $2,500 and $3,500.
Set against the benchmarks above, our floor sits below the national average for local SEO and our typical engagement lands near the middle of what small businesses spend on search. We are not the cheap option and we are not a premium one. We are priced where this work is priced.
- Every partnership is scoped to your goals. We do not sell packages off a shelf, because a roofer in Oakland County and a dental practice in Kent County do not need the same twelve months.
- Standard term is twelve months. We will scope shorter in the right situation and rarely go under nine, because the foundational work is front loaded and the results compound.
- Website build is waived on a twelve month marketing program.
- You own your ad accounts. Our management fee is separate from your ad spend, so you always know what you are paying us and what you are paying the platforms.
And the part that matters most: if what your business needs is $500 a month of listing maintenance, we will say so on the call rather than sell you something larger. We would rather lose a bad fit than manage one for a year.
Full numbers and terms are on our pricing page.
The Short Version
Most Michigan businesses competing for customers in search land between $1,500 and $3,500 a month. Metro Detroit legal, medical, and home services start higher. A single location in a quiet market can be served well for less.
Read any monthly figure across twelve months, because that is the window this work needs to mean anything.
And start with the question sitting underneath the price. Being findable and being chosen cost different amounts because they are different jobs.
